Facebook Like Button Gains Better Sharing Functionality

.

Facebook has been living in a two-button world. First, the social networking giant provided online publishers with a Share button, then it followed up with a Like button that replaced the notion of Facebook fans.

While these two buttons have both been used for awhile, they actually operated differently in terms of how they allowed individuals to share information on Facebook. The Like button was a simple one-step sharing process, while the Share button allowed users to share a headline, blurb and an image for an article in a multi-step process. With Facebook's most recent update to its Like button, all of the functionality of the Share button has now become a part of the Like button, while keeping the Like to a simple one-click process.

describe the image

When users press the Like button today, a headline, blurb and thumbnail will be posted on their Wall. Then, they will be given the option to comment on that item. Prior to these upgrades to the Like button, only a link to your article would appear in a users recently activity, which receives less attention than the profile Wall.

Marketing Takeaway

For marketers, these changes highlight that Facebook is trying to move to one sharing button for publishers. With this change in functionality, it is clear that the Share button will be fading away in favor of a more robust Like button. As a business publishing content online, you should leverage Facebook as a referral source of traffic. These new Like button features are yet another reason businesses need to have at least one image in their blog post. Having an image in your blog post will help your article stand out more, when it is shared on Facebook.

Now that the Like button shares articles in a more holistic way, marketers should be looking at their analytics to see how their traffic from Facebook changes. Continue to encourage people to Like your blog content. More traffic also means that it is more important than ever to have calls to action on your business blog and within your individual blog posts.

Are you excited about these changes to the Like button?

COMMENTS

This is great. I noticed the shift when trying to find a link to the share button code but was redirected to the like button. I was worried if the like button was to become their button of choice it would be harder for my Facebook friends to see the content I've liked. Now I don't have to worry.

Have the folks at FB gone mad? It would seem so with so many changes lately, many of which really didn't make things easier for people. The LIKE and SHARE are two totally different things a person can do. I think they should remain separate, as they are now. I don't see a need for a big post if I LIKE something. Just my opinion....

While I admire Facebook's effort toward condensing the two buttons into one, I'm not so sure that users will understand that when you press the Like button, you're actually sharing the article. It's confusing to call it anything other than what it is. As publishers, we have a duty to not only implement the latest technology for our users, but also to make sure to present that technology in an easy to understand way. Facebook continues to make this hard for us. Anyone have any thoughts on how this can be done with the new Like button format?

I actually like the new "Like" button as it is much easier to explain to someone who uses Facebook casually vs. having to explain the differences (think about your parents). I think they're taking a page from the Apple playbook of simplicity (I never had to tell a mac user to right/left click on anything...they just click). There will always be the hardcore fans of any technology that will want more control, but keeping it simple for end users smells of marketing success to me.

I saw recently that this was going away but I agree with Jon's comment that the Like and the Share are 2 seperate things with 2 different purposes. We recently wrote a blog post on retailers using the Like button and surprisingly, few are even though results from those that do have been substantial. With Bing's recent announcement to add Facebook Like's to search results, in addition to Facebook's intent to focus on 1 way to 'share' something, this should be interesting. I am curious if something is going to replace the Share button or what caused them to choose Like over Share. http://www.zmags.com/blog/facebook-like-ecommerce

I agree that "Liking" something and "sharing" something are two very different things. While appreciate the two concepts merging presents a more "holistic" way to share information I do think that it will create confusion for the general user.

Is there any indication of when these changes will be rolling out in the UK?

This is great. Finally the like button works the way it is suppose to. There was previously little value in the Like button for social media sharing. I am glad it is fixed.

I have a blog with the Facebook "Share on Facebook' button. Do I need to get new code to upgrade it?
