12 Marketing Lessons From the Cast of Glee

.

Those of you who are fans of the hit TV show Glee know that the characters all have very big personalities that tend to set them apart from the others. But I’ll bet you never stopped to think that some of their character traits might actually make them pretty good marketers!

1. Rachel’s got killer talent.

She has the skills to perform well, whether she’s on stage, in the classroom, or defending a point.

Marketing Takeaway: Be a marketing star! While almost anyone can learn to be a good marketer, some of the best marketers are the ones who have a natural skill for it.

2. Santana can analyze any person or situation.

Ask Santana for the scoop on just about anything, and she’s got it. She has a sharp intuition about people and a knack for figuring things out before others do.

Marketing Takeaway: Keep close tabs on the state of affairs of your customers, and always be thinking one step ahead. Follow marketing industry trends and think about the impact they will have on your business.

3. Quinn strives for perfection.

She’ll do whatever she can to accomplish her goals, and when something’s in her way, she’ll figure out how to get around it.

Marketing Takeaway: Set monthly, quarterly, and annual marketing goals. Use web analytics and your customer relationship management (CRM) software for reporting.

4. Finn is a team leader.

He looks out for the group and tries to make decisions that will be best for the team. Finn is willing to step up to the plate when the group needs guidance.

Marketing Takeaway: Leading is not limited to your company internally. Instead, create a content strategy that will help your company be the thought leader in its industry.

5. Mercedes is loyal.

She won’t betray her team or her friends. She’s there when someone needs her, and she’s always supportive.

Marketing Takeaway: Be an engaging marketer in social media. Be loyal to your community and answer questions from, fans, customers, and prospects to create rapid fans of your business.

6. Britney isn’t afraid to ask questions.

Even though she often risks embarrassment, Britney always asks others for help when she’s confused.

Marketing Takeaway: Ask the right questions to get the information you need. Interview industry experts as part of your inbound marketing strategy. Think about the questions your customers are trying to answer and create content around those questions.

7. Kurt is honest.

He expresses himself like no other and refuses to hide who he is.  He’s a big believer in telling people the truth and facing the truth head on.

Marketing Takeaway: Be honest with both your customers and yourself, and know that avoiding the truth will only make the situation worse later on. Transpaency is key on the social web.

8. Puck defies the standards.

When he isn’t pleased with the way things are going, he changes the rules. Puck sets his own standards and does what he thinks is best.

Marketing Takeaway: Don't rely only on outbound marketing. Just because the competition is employing certain marketing tactics doesn't make them the right tactics for your business. Redefine the status quo with marketing testing and leadership within your organization. Furthermore, don't be afraid to experiment with and test new marketing trends.

9. Lauren (Zizes) is confident.

She has complete faith in herself and doesn’t let others knock her down. When she wants to, she can instill that confidence in others as well.

Marketing Takeaway: Empower customers. Sometimes your customers can be your best marketers. Provide platforms for customers to evangalize on your behalf like a company blog, forum, or Facebook Page.

10. Tina sticks up for others.

She won’t just sit and watch as someone insults or tries to hurt one of her friends, especially those she loves most. Tina will always defend the people she cares about.

Marketing Takeaway: You can’t just be concerned with yourself.  Become involved with your community, and speak up on behalf of your customers and your industry. Take stands on important issues by publishing commentary on your blog and social media accounts.

11. Mike doesn’t always need the spotlight.

He’s incredibly talented, and often under-recognized for it, but he doesn’t need everyone’s attention to be on him.  Mike is humble and happy to let his teammates take the stage, yet he doesn’t let people put him in the corner either.

Marketing Takeaway: Be humble. Don't preach to your prospects and customers. Instead, provide them with actionable how-to content and resources so that they can become stars of their own.

12. Artie avoids confrontation.

While he realizes that it’s important to stand up for others, Artie never actively seeks an argument or fight. He is always in favor of working out a problem calmly and step by step.

Marketing Takeaway: As a marketer, pick your battles. Understand that sometimes an agry customer just needs to blow off steam and allow them to do that before resolving their issue. If you do encounter negative comments, kill them with kindness by apologizing and offering your help or a resolution.

Maybe it’s time the Glee club put together their skills not just for singing, but also for marketing!

I would be interested in hearing your take on how Glee has managed to market a show that could have tanked spectacularly and instead built a rabid and exceptionally loyal following.

They have gone from being dependant on standards and classic rock to a notch on the belt for Top 20 artists.

Pull one off using the show "The Office". Love to hear what you have to say about Dwight and his beets

Santana's skills should be used before Artie's kick in. Sometimes a customer is a bully and no matter how much love you show them their still a bully.
