Blogging is key to any inbound marketing plan. Not only is it a great way to add pages to your site and increase your footprint, it also improves your search rankings and helps get more inbound links. However, by writing and publishing blog articles, you aren't getting the most out of all your efforts, you also need to promote your content.
In order to determine what promoting a blog post can do for you, we took a look at the blog posts of our 5000 customers. We reviewed the results for posts that were shared via Twitter and Facebook after being written and compared them to posts that were not shared. We learned that when posted to Twitter and Facebook after being written blog posts generated,
160% More Page Views
It's not surprising that telling people about your blog post generates more page views. It is interesting that blog posts shared only on Twitter tended to have 63% more page views than those shared on Facebook and 117% more page views than those not shared at all.
149% More Inbound Links
Sharing your blog posts also dramatically increases the number of inbound links a post will receive. Posts only shared on Twitter had 54% more inbound links than those shared just on Facebook, and 113% more than those not shared at all.
55% More Comments
Blog posts shared via Twitter and Facebook also generated 55% more comments than those not shared at all. What's interesting is that only with comments does Facebook generate a higher return than Twitter.
Marketing Takeaway
Writing and publishing a blog post isn't enough. You need to promote your blog posts and tell people about them! Using social media to get the word out and let people know about your post is a great way to boost page views, inbound links and comments.
In order to save time, look into whether your blogging software can automatically share your blog posts on Twitter and Facebook when you publish them. If your software doesn't take this step for you, look into external tools like Twitterfeed .

This is so true, great blog post. With everything coming out recently related to Facebook and Goolge+, social media integration is going to become bigger and bigger. We are looking forward to the Apple media event on October 4 when they announce the new iPhone 5 as well as what Facebook is integrating. Wow, this is disappointing. I didn't expect Hubspot, which is normally brilliant, to make the blunder of assuming that correlation equals causation.

I think it's better for me to agree with your stats about "63% more page views" from Twitter compared to Facebook.
What I can guess; Twitter is most likely for Adults, whereas Facebook is for Kids. My personal opinion, anyway.

Great insights here - my view on why twitter tends to deliver better is that twitter users tend to be more active on social networks in general than those just using facebook. Given this it makes sense that they'd take more time to check out a blog post and share it.
Not sure about the increased comments from facebook users though, would need to delve further into the stats. Perhaps facebook commenting being integrated into the blogs affected this figure?
Here are some other tips for increasing sharing of blog posts.

I find some informative visual representation. Twitter and Facebook are the two eyes of social media that play an important role in social sharing.
When a good content gets shared through these social platforms, there are more possibility by which the blog page views increases more than 160% because people network is the power of T and F. So when the network(fans or followers)increases, automatically your blog content gets increased marketing.
So social sharing through Twitter and Facebook is the best way to market any product or content in this current situation.
These social networks not only suit for blogs but also for great sites like Groupon, Techcrunch, Digg, etc.
Thanks..
