5 Lame Excuses From People Still Using HotMail For Email

Call me judgemental, but whenever I get business email from someone using a HotMail.com address I can't help but wonder why? [What's even worse: Folks that use what sounds like a family email address like michaelandjane@hotmail.com for their business correspondnece]

If you're one of those people still using HotMail.com and wondering right now "is it really that big a deal?", let me be the first to tell you: YES. It's an image issue. For the same reason you likely shouldn't scribble your phone number on the back of your dry cleaning receipt when you meet someone at a business conference (that's what business cards are for), you shouldn't email from a HotMail.com address. For personal contacts, anything is just fine. For business purposes, It just doesn't make the right impression.

Note: This is a public service announcement. I do not sell email hosting services, domain registration services and have nothing against HotMail.

In my opinion, businesses should have their own domain name (ex: mycompany.com) and an email addresses on that domain (someaddress@mycompany.com). This does two things: Give you a professional image, and further solidifes your brand. Note: This does not mean you have to necessarily use paid emailing hosting services. Gmail works great and will let you pull in your email from just about any third-party service.

I tried to think about the possible reasons (excuses) some people still use when trying to argue why they don't have an email address like jdoe@mycompany.com

5 Lame Excuses For Still Using Hotmail.com For Business

1. I already know HotMail: Sure, but there were people that "already knew" how to use a fax machine a long time ago as well. Times change. Doesn't hurt to learn new things.

2. I don't need more features: How do you know until you try? I challenge you to setup a free Gmail account and use it exclusively for a week (more on this later). The features are simply stellar. Some of them are so good, you'll wonder how you lived without them.

3. I don't have my own domain: If you are a business person, you need your own domain. Period. If you can't justify the $20/year to create some semblance of a professional image for yourself, I think you're being short-sighted and not taking your business seriously. I don't care of you are 12 years old and have a lemonade stand. Get your own domain name.

4. I don't have the technical expertise: You must know at least one person that can spend 15 minutes with you to help you setup a domain with email. If not, you need to expand your pool of friends and colleagues.

5. Everyone already knows my Hotmail.com address: Sure. But you can still accept emails to your old address indefinitey. Just start using your new and people will slowly switch over. There's no sense in furthering the problem any longer (i.e. it won't get easier).

Do you have any other lame excuses you've heard from friends that are still using HotMail for business? (I'm assuming if you're reading this article that you're not one of "those" people). If so, please leave them in the comments. If you are one of those people that has this problem, you can confess in the comments and we will try to help you through this difficult time.

I agree; its too easy to upgrade to inexpensive business email to impact your corporate image. Hotmail is a great personal email service but inspiring confidence is important to establishing a strong business relationship

You forgot to mention that HotMail blocks and is being blocked by many other ISPs and Email providers. Also some SPAM filters tend to block HotMail emails as well. I'm also not going to promote any Regsitrars but novadays it's quite easy to find domain registration provider for under 10$/year.

I completely agree with this post. When I see business people using a HotMail address, I automatically assume they don't know their business. I made the switch from Hotmail around 3 years ago and I have never looked back.

GREAT article. i could not agree more! there are other free emails like gmail that work fine, but the best is one related to your website or business.

Google Apps provides hosted email. You can have your own domain name ( jdoe@mycompany.com ) and access your email through the Gmail interface. The standard addition is free. More info here - https://www.google.com/a/smallbiz/

I've been a big GMail fan almost since it was released. It's like you say, some features are so good you wonder how you lived without them. For the corporate types, or the geeky, GMail is also very protocol-compliant and open, as opposed to Hotmail. Want to export all your mail out of Hotmail? Good luck! With GMail, it's easy: both POP3 and IMAP are supported, both for import and export, and all for free.

While I completely agree with your article here I must remind you that there are still people out there who think that the internet is the 'blue E' on their desktop. They are lucky to be using an email since they were on a typewriter last year. They have a handwritten sheet of email addresses that they type in each time because they don't understand the concept of an address book (gmail would help with this one). Anyway my point is that some people will never get there, you should continue to encourage them all the same. All the best, -Dan-

Hello ! Nice article (it will be a big hit in digg ;D, but I am not agree with you. I use hotmail as a webmail and it is just was I need : - I bought a web domain, and in hotmail I used several "nicknames" adresse eitheir @hotmail.com for personnal or @conseilsmarketing.fr for pro... - Even after 3 virus attack & computer crash I still have all my emails because they are on hotmail... It won't be the same if you used outlook - I can consult my address anywhere & anytime, be alerted by my MSN, having the same old email address since 10 years... - ... Finally the question is not using hot mail or it, it is having your own email address or not...

Am I the only one that was annoyed by "HotMail" instead of "Hotmail"?
Also, I agree with Fred de ConseilsMarketing.fr. Hotmail's great for running other addresses through it.

Why pick on hotmail? Its also not very professional to conduct business with a gmail, aol or yahoo account right?
I think you should have mentioned that in your article.
In defense of hotmail (for personal correspondence), it uses a different protocol than other web mail services. If you create, delete and rename folders then move a few emails about in your hotmail account ... it is reflected IMMEDIATELY in your outlook or live mail software (folder names change etc).
Also windows Live Mail beta is worth a look, if only for automatic filtering, multiple email account support and RSS capability ... and I'm not even a Microsoft fan!

You are correct. In fact, I used to think like you did.
But Internet mail has now come full circle. I have dozens of domains for which I am the responsible person, and I receive up to 500 legitimate emails a day. Furthermore email from lots and lots of email addresses are forwarded to me.
The only way I can handle all of this and filter out thousands of spam messages is by forwarding everything to one Gmail address and to use that address for all the correspondence. I will go as far as saying that if you don't use GMail, you are wasting time and money.
Yes, for all the reasons that you mention I have several unique role-based email addresses for every domain and it's associated website.
But don't discard "free email services" offhand. In my case it is an elegant solution to a lot of problems!

I see a lot of people using Hotmail for business. This is especially true of the one owner local business that wants an email address.
These folks need to be educated. They really don't know its bad for business.

I have got to say that a big fish in a small pond makes that most money. I can not say that I agree with any of the comments above (but one) due to the fact of this statement. I am a 3rd generation internet marketer. And The key to making money online is knowing how and where to start. I have got to say that no one here that has left any comeents really know what they are talking about. I have made a personal furtune useing hotmails etc. Big fish in small ponds really do receive the most bites! Thanks! Just My Thoughts...

I know a thing or two about emails and I will have to say that someone has got to be kidding! I have necer seen anyone so up set with emails. Try to think out side of the box a little and it will get you a long ways in his business...

Seriously - STOP DEFENDING YOUR USE OF HOTMAIL. It's lazy and bad business practice. If you email me from a hotmail account, I will delete you assuming you are spam, unless I already know you. Why advertise for hotmail, or by that account, Gmail, AOL, COX, Qwest, SBC, Yahoo etc. Spend $7.99 and buy a domain. Set up free webmail. For the person who talked about getting all the computer crashes - STOP USING OUTLOOK. You don't have to use out look or any other email client to use your own domain. Use a webmail service. There is NO WAY that anyone out there could give me a compelling argument about why they can't do it. It's as futile as trying to explain away drunk driving - there is just no excuse. Grow up and grow your business.

I'll add to this... I have several domains that I administer on the side, but my job is as a printer - Business cards, invoices, cheques... basically stationary packages. What really irritates me is the people selling themselves as 'webmaster' who aren't telling people that they have email when they get their site hosted. They're even missing a sales opportunity. Use it as an add-on for $10 to set it up. It's only a three minute job. Stop hurting your clients, and get an education. Want to sell your self as a professional? Than ACT LIKE ONE!

I get this all the time, but I even think it's wrong to use hotmail or yahoo for personal afairs. When on craigslist, I know right away that it's going to be a bumpy transaction if I get an email from hotmail or yahoo.

Another GREAT example is one that I set was talking to a relative about about their site/email. The company hosting her site set up a info@domain.com on her site. She had a domain@yahoo.com email! thinking she was getting all her business email there instead. I took control, contacted the hosting company, got them to switch the setting for gmail and bam! gmail interface with info@domain.com email! Then I just set a vacation message with the new email on her yahoo email and done.

Ohh and yahoo does not support IMAP or STMP!

also, this lost my relative about 1,500-2,000 dollars worth of business due to the email slop!
