Log this update under "news that should've been news months and months ago." Looks like Google+ is finally rolling out custom vanity URLs for Google+ business pages and personal profiles, as reported by Marketing Land earlier today.
This means that our social media team will soon be able to change this hideous looking URL -- http://plus.google.com/114124401690420551118 -- which leads to HubSpot's Google+ business page, into something much more professional, memorable, and shareable ... like say, this -- http://plus.google.com/+HubSpot. And you'll be able to make a similar change to your own Google+ URL, too! The change will make Google+ pages a heck of a lot easier to promote.
It's about time, right? Especially considering Google+ already had us on our toes when Google+ VP Bradley Horowitz mentioned at Google’s I/O conference in June that custom URLs would be coming soon.
Hold your horses, though. In a Google+ post, Google+ employee Saurabh Sharma said Google+ is rolling out custom URLs to a limited number of verified profiles and pages first. Some verified accounts that already have custom URLs include +TOYOTA at google.com/+toyota, +Britney Spears at google.com/+britneyspears, +Ubisoft at google.com/+assassinscreed, and +Delta at google.com/+delta.
Google+ plans to offer custom URLs to more Google+ users over time, but has made no mention of exactly when. However, Sharma confirms that eventually, they will be available to all people and pages worldwide. We'll be sure to keep our eyes and ears open over here and alert you when you can create your own vanity URL, making your Google+ business page URL much more internet-friendly.
Who's ready?!

It's time to enhance the branding and recognition with G+ :)

This is the second post today regarding Google +. In the interest of full disclosure, you should tell your readers that Google has an equity interest in HubSpot.
Tthe close relationship HubSpot has with Google colors the perspective and advice that is promoted in these type of blogs.
You fail to site any releant statistics that give credence that Google + is an effective platform. A simple search reveals that Google + is a failing social media platform and has been for many months.
So why do you as well as other blog writers from HubSpot continue to promote it. Check out your customers statistics to see if Google + is making an impact for them then get back to us with actual information that we can use.

What took them so long? LinkedIn and Facebook have been offering this for years.

Finally, this is what we've all been waiting for:-)

The custom naming, or lack thereof, is my primary reason for not putting much time into G+. With this change, I'm sure it will finally take off..

So this means that maybe in the next few years the little guy actually gets to compete on Google? Well . . . maybbe in our dreams! In the meantime I won't quit my day job.

It doesn't really seem like there is any news here. Just basically stating the same old lame Google practices. Unveil a potential unveiling, and the only thing we learn is that these companies cater to the cult of celebrity and the hard working businesses and professionals who might really need this service are left out in the cold.
Not to mention these celebs and corporations are not even liked that much by most of us in Social Media. When is the last time any of them actually spoke to the author for instance or this publication?
I venture to guess the answer is never.
Google just miscalculating again. Yawn.

Good. This should be old news - got that right. Anxious to get my own G+ pages URL!

@Jon Nugent - get a grip mate.
This is Hubspots blog - not the Financial Times. It can be used for whatever they wish to promote or to support.
Putting my impartial hat on, I see this as an entirely acceptable and useful post. Most of us interested in online marketing don't need Hubspot to point out or remind us of any of Google+'s stats.
Having a vanity url slicks back some of our online hair - that's all we need to know.

GOOGLE in the meantime is GOD in Germany with 92% of all search machines' users. They can fuck you up any website without any reason as they did with ours forcing you to pay 10.000s per month for ADWORDS to can continue your little business.=
The exactly same keywords we've been using since 2008 cost TRIPLE in the meantime. Does GOOGLE want to reign the world by killing all small businesses on that planet?
And, how is Hubspot linked with Google? What kind of interests do they have to each other?
Regards,
Paul / St. Petersburg / Russian Federation

@Jon Nugent - "A simple search reveals that Google + is a failing social media platform and has been for many months."
Are you sure you didn't search for Facebook? The last I heard Google+ has seen a significant rise in traffic and as a user who interacts on there I can safely say it is a thriving community.

Excellent, I am looking forward to it... Slowly leaving Facebook and moving myself over to G+, once I fully understand what people use it for might help!
Cheers

The following information was curated verbatim from OnStartUp a blog for entrepreneurs.
A few years ago, Google AdWords was great for startups. Many niches were untouched, and 5 and 10 cent clicks were commonplace.
But these days, the vast majority of niches worth pursuing have ever-escalating click prices as more advertising dollars move online, including dollars from large corporations that don't blink an eye about spending $5 to produce a single visitor to their website.
With a 1% conversion rate you need a $500 lifetime customer value to break even. This is more than a stretch for most startups who are scraping by on 0.5% conversion rates and sub-$100 lifetime customer values (at least to start with).
But with Google carpet-bombing $75 AdWords coupons to every business in the civilized world, the number of advertisers, and thus the competition, is increasing. For the most part, the days of cheap clicks are over.
Since I run my business using HubSpot analytics, my hope one day is that HubSpot bloggers use the analytics of their customer base to provide more metrics to justify the use of any techniques suggested. What testing methodology do HubSpot bloggers use to test their theories or validate specific marketing techniques.
I feel that HubSpot bloggers would like their customer base to spend our marketing resources on Facebook and Pinterest posting pictures of pretty kittens because the majority of the bloggers lack any real successful business experience.
As far as the other comments posted, show me facts, figures, numbers, statistics. Show me the relevance of Google + to converted leads, cash flow, ROI, anything, then you can speak with some authority and credibility. Otherwise, like the majority of the blog articles coming from HubSpot, you have no standing with me.

Very much looking forward to this. But I wish it was a full roll out where everyone could change their name.
Amy Flynn 12:34 PM on August 14, 2012
Congratulations Google! You finally saw the light at the end of the + !

It's about time -- whoever came up with the current system anyway? What a visual mess the current URLs are. Of course as soon as the custom names are revealed, it will be a race to get your own name. But then it's all about BRANDING.
Adeline Yuboco 5:07 AM on August 15, 2012
I have to agree with Michael. It's high time that they did this. Quite frankly, I was surprised that they didn't offer this from the start, considering that this was already being offered by Facebook for some time.
Robby 6:58 AM on August 15, 2012
I am pleased Google is still moving forward with Google+, the jury is still out on whether it will become a significant social force. The integration with search means it cannot be ignored.
ACME Powerwash 11:50 AM on August 15, 2012
Great news! I have also wondered why they didn't offer vanity URLs at the very beginning. Looking forward to our new URL without all the numbers!
Nathan Giesbrecht 5:12 PM on August 15, 2012
Great! I've been using URL shortening services for this purpose, but it's about time Google provided the option.
Natalie 5:14 AM on August 17, 2012
How can i do that?
Ryan 3:18 PM on August 17, 2012
Too bad, it's still not available to most G+ users, but only to the verified accounts and known accounts. We would still need to wait.
