Are you partying ... I mean marketing ... like it's 1999? Unfortunately, many of the marketing tactics that were considered best practices 15 years ago are actually indications of crappy marketing today. And while we generally use our blog to give marketers advice and provide helpful tips, how-to's, and information about the latest trends so they can do marketing that doesn't suck, sometimes it's also helpful to understand what "bad" means so you know exactly what to avoid -- and create marketing people love instead!
So if you're curious about what you should be doing to totally suck at marketing, the following slideshow will show you the way. Just don't say we never told you so ...
What else can you do to totally suck at marketing? Share your wisdom in the comments below!

Your capital I's in this presentation were very distracting. I'm only on slide 16 and I had to stop just to tell you how annoying it is. I will continue to read this presentation and future blog posts but only if you promise NEVER,EVER to use the capital I's again! Thank you.

Ryan has done it again. Great slides. Great tips.
Richard Milton 9:16 AM on January 16, 2013
One really geat way to suck at marketing is to publish a slid show that reads:-
"We have encountered an error,
please refresh the page"!
Jeanna 9:25 AM on January 16, 2013
Just watched your slide show "How to Totally Suck @ Marketing"... interesting ... ;) love you."
BTW underneath the slide show on the same page is a marketing promo to down load a free e-book...
the CTA has a typo ..."learn to create and execute a marketing campaign that makes your

Couldn't load your slide presentation. Trouble with marketing on web!
Dean 9:46 AM on January 16, 2013
Your video will not load. That does suck. Is this the only lesson? lol
Louise Egan 9:57 AM on January 16, 2013
How true!
Steven Crofts 10:08 AM on January 16, 2013
Dang. One yucky marketing problem:
"We have encountered an error,
please refresh the page"!
chris yates 10:26 AM on January 16, 2013
Funny! Love it.
Pamela Vaughan 10:30 AM on January 16, 2013
For those of you who were having trouble viewing the slideshow, can you try again? We speculate that SlideShare may have been down or having technical difficulties for a while. Everything seems to be working smoothly now.
Jeanna -- Thanks for alerting me to the typo in the CTA! I'm updating it now. Good eye! :)

We just laughed out loud. This is exactly what we run into all the time. It is seriously like taking away a client's "woobie!" They have a hard time letting go of their old habits!
I want to repurpose your slides!!!!!
webmoghuls 10:44 AM on January 16, 2013
good presentation!
Rand 10:50 AM on January 16, 2013
Notwithstanding the typos, great stuff and (Ouch!) painfully true. Thanks for a fresh take on the virtues of inbound marketing.
julie 10:55 AM on January 16, 2013
I was excited to check this out, but it's still not working.
Evan 11:30 AM on January 16, 2013
I'm very interested in how to suck at marketing, but not so interested that I want to click my way through 60 slides. = /
Shelby 11:32 AM on January 16, 2013
Not sure why all the negativity here! If you've never worked with Hubspot before, you are missing out. They truly are the leaders of inbound marketing.
Tiana Kai 11:46 AM on January 16, 2013
Brilliant!! I can't stop laughing and sadly enough I know we all know a few 1999ers.
Derek Temple 11:49 AM on January 16, 2013
You guys know your stuff.
Andrea 11:55 AM on January 16, 2013
This was AWESOME. Great job. I enjoyed that great laugh... sadly, some people won't get it!
Colin 12:12 PM on January 16, 2013
Also don't forget to spend all your time worrying about serp rank - who cares about content quality, people don't read that stuff anyway!
Bettina Horvath 12:14 PM on January 16, 2013
Bwahahahahaha this is brilliant!
Despite the grammar police out in force. Lighten up people! At least we can have some fun doing marketing :)
And I love how you used the medium (slideshare) to tell a story. Great idea, love it. Want to use slideshare more and this is a good example.
Michael Dion 12:16 PM on January 16, 2013
Ah, spelling & grammar... Such power to make a company look like a bunch of idiots... even when they're not.
Christos 12:38 PM on January 16, 2013
As much as I really enjoy reading your articles, it really is annoying trying to watch a slide show that does not load. You should really fix it or advise what to do to watch it.
Sheri 12:39 PM on January 16, 2013
I still can't get the slide show to work. I'll check back later though because the other people's comments are intriguing me.
Chris Higgins 12:45 PM on January 16, 2013
I'd really like to see the slide show but it won't load. this is the second Hubspot post I've had this problem with in the last couple of days.
Chris Sanchez 12:46 PM on January 16, 2013
Awesome slide show!
It's amazing how even with capital I's and some encountered errors, there are still so many people who have received and commented on this blog post. (taking possibly 5 minutes out of their day to think about HubSpot)
The slide show brings up some great questions for marketers and small business owners to think about as we roll into 2013.
Respectfully,
Chris

I enjoyed the sarcastic slideshow. I want marketing that works. I find it hilarious that so many blogs, books, and companies still use old marketing strategies and get no where. I rather not using $$$ on mailings to people I do not know. Also, I am curious to know why the number of websites hasn't increased when such a large percentage of buyers are online. (just a thought) Thank you for sharing this slideshow.
Steve Kirstein 1:04 PM on January 16, 2013
Not sure what the problem is with slide #40 - the rest of it makes perfect sense though ;)
John Kreiss 1:24 PM on January 16, 2013
Spend too much time thinking about yourself instead of others, and you're likely to suck at marketing.
Kim Teetzel 1:34 PM on January 16, 2013
Still getting the error message ....
"We have encountered an error,
please refresh the page"!
Scott Ayres 2:37 PM on January 16, 2013
Really great slideshow. I think we all fall into sucking at marketing at times.
Glenda Pagan 3:12 PM on January 16, 2013
Wow! People just love to bash every one else huh? Pointing out typos, bashing the slide! I love how you can kill them with love :)
Anyways I loved it! Super funny yet very informative!
dan 3:29 PM on January 16, 2013
in that my job requires outbound calls; I still loved the piece. I hope to be able to get change going in my sales department.
Berry 6:31 PM on January 16, 2013
I can't look at the slides on my work computer so I love how on other posts you have put them underneath in picture form. I would really appreciate it if you could do that with all your slideshows.
Love your work,

While a lot of these marketing mistakes seem too obvious to miss, a lot of us marketers still end up doing them. In the desire to get even a little bit more business leads, they just end up losing way more.
Thanks for this excellent reminder, Ryan.
Michael Joliat 9:54 AM on January 17, 2013
Great points, I have forwarded this on to a couple of clients, just to reenforce my point about changing up their current marketing mantra. You presented this in a great, not-offensive and humorous way-- Thanks!

This sure does SUCK! Cannot load it!
Kim 9:16 PM on January 18, 2013
Great content, great style! Reminds me of the current TV ad for the Dodge Dart. Lots of people complaining they can't load/view, not good, well guess what, the pdf file is 28MB. That's way too big for fast response. Gotta master the technology. But keep up the good work.
Seth 3:58 PM on January 19, 2013
I couldn't get it to load until I hit the "fullscreen" icon, then it worked find. I am sure that many of us are guilty of some of these marketing don'ts.
Richard Sharp 5:27 PM on January 22, 2013
If only it were this simple to prove to clients their marketing is in desperate need of an overhaul. Also, I just love getting double glazing calls whilst i'm trying to eat my tea.
