6 Simple SEO Tips For Small Business Straight From Google

Google's Matt Cutts posted a great article on his blog recently with simple and practical tips for small businesses.

 The video is included below.

The following are some of the simple tips made in the video.  Great advice for small business marketers.  The points in the video are simple, but it's interesting because it's straight, unfiltered advice from Google.

6 Simple SEO Tips For Small Business

1.  What do people search for?  Think about what people are going to type to find your site.

2.  Title tags matter.  It's what the user first sees on Google results.

3.  Don't worry that much about the keywords meta tag.

4.  Use the meta description tag.  It is often shown to web users when they search on Google.

5.  Start a blog!  Participate in the conversation.  Doesn't have to be complex or fancy.  Things that are interesting to you are probably interesting to your users/customers.

Examples:  What made you decide to start a small business?  What were your weirdest customer experiences?

6.  Find conversations using social media.  Try digg and StumbleUpon.

7.  You do not have to pay Google to get traffic from Google.  Google crawls your website for free.  Just make sure it can find your website.

8.  Advertising on Google doesn't influence rankings.  Buying advertising on Google does not influence search results.

If something else caught you attention in the video that I haven't mentioned, please leave a comment.  The above are just some of the hilights

As the saying goes...."content is King". Nothing can substitute a sites ability to be seen in good position, like having the most relevant content on your site.

Thanks for posting the video and your summation.

One other thing Matt Cutts mentioned is making sure Google has a sitemap for your site. It definitely seems to make a difference for Google search results.

I understand the sitemap concept but if a page is added should I automatically submit a new sitemap? If the site is a blog there are new pages being added all the time, How often should you update your sitemap?

Great stuff! Another item that Matt mentioned is that besides sending Google your site map, you can just send them a single URL-so perhaps you have one great new page that you want Google to pick up now...it waswww.google.com/addurl.

But I too am curious about the sitemap, and how often you should send that to Google.

This was a great interview and just confirms everything I found out by observation. People have found me in the various ways he mentioned. I was surprised to see one of my articles listed as the fifth article on the first page for the key words. In my industry, that is very hard to achieve. I am not a giant in my industry. I didn't plan it. Google crawled my site.

Thanks for the interview and the information about site maps.

I've personally found that site maps are an excellent way to not only clearly spell-out your content for the search engines, but reiterate your content as well. I explain it to clients for whom I'm doing web copy as telling your kid to clean-up the front yard and then leaving a note on the fridge about the same task :) Silent reinforcement.

For what it's worth!

When you update your site, you should update your site map and then on the next crawl, Google and other engines will index. Use Melissa's info on adding a new URL above - thanks Melissa!

You're welcome Erika!

Question- I have never posted our sitemap on Goolge and Matt said that you just send them a text version. How do I go about doing that? And what's the general turn around time once Google receives that?

I love the silent reinforcement comment!

that guy doesn't even work at google. he talks too elequently, he didn't even have a slide rule in his pocket. how can he be an engineer??? he is just some guy in a black t-shirt in google's lobby.

one thing he didn't mention is if you use google adwords, you can use their keyword search to find out how popular certain keyword phrases are, and use those phrases in your site content to help be discovered when searching, and the importance of page rank. but this stuff is still pretty tricky, so if you are serious about inbound marketing, you should shell out the bucks and have a talented professional help you, i recommend hubspot, they are orange, and that is branding.

Good advice. #1 is the most important when it comes to SEO. Especially now that google has released their numbers inside their keyword tool research.

Matt Cutts “in the flesh” – great stuff – thanks for bring this video to my attention, and thanks for the brief summary of the main points made by Matt. My 2 cent on the point about starting a blog – great idea, but from a SEO point of view, I think it will be more effective to your overall visibility on the Web if you have the blog reside “under” your Web site domain – that way, the content of your blog will also be seen as part of your web site content. Check with your Web site host company – most of the large hosts offer at least one type of free blogging software that can be installed “under” your existing domain – I recommend using WordPress if your Web hosting company offers it.

I totally agree with Matt! If you've ever owned a business, then you probably considered yourself a small business owner at one point and, therefore, you know what it means to have a marketing budget. Besides setting up a great website, you still have to market it and optimize it for search engines (aka SEO).

There are some really good free and low-cost classified ad-space on the web. The ones I recommend are utlizing Craigslist and all the social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. Then there's Jippidy.com which allows business owners to post videos about their business.

Before spending a fortune on online marketing, don't forget that sometimes the best forms of advertising are free.. like word of mouth advertising and social networking!
