Combine SEO, Blogging and Social Media to Optimize Your Marketing Efforts

.

[Update: The presentation slides have been added to the end of this blog article.]

webinarToday at 1:00pm EST, we will be giving a free webinar on how to combine SEO, blogging and social media to fully optimize your inbound marketing campaign. As a prelude, we wanted to give you a brief overview of the material that it will cover and a few tips to get you started.

More often than not, consumers are researching the blogosphere, checking out friends' first-hand reviews or simply using Google to learn more about products and services. Smart marketers adapt to this consumer behavior by making content readily available for consumers to find, using tools like blogs, social media and SEO.

While many marketers understand the benefits of each tool, unfortunately they often aren't used together. For example, a company may work to increase SEO, but only a handful maintain a blog. Of those who blog, only occasionally do they integrate social media.

Here is a breakdown of an easy three-part campaign that any marketer can easily adopt into his or her own strategy. Within the campaign, I will break it apart to illustrate how blogging, social media and SEO work together in each step.

1) Publish Content

  • Blogging: Start by writing a great blog article. Make your content interesting and helpful.
  • Social Media: Post your blog article on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and -- when appropriate --  Digg. Ask people what they think!
  • SEO: Make sure your content is fully keyword-optimized. Include lots of links to further information. Also, blog often to create as many pages as possible to be indexed in Google.

2) Monitor What People Say About Your Content

  • Blogging: Read other people's blogs. Respond to those people commenting on your blog. Set up an RSS feed for easier tracking.
  • Social Media: Look around on Facebook and Twitter to see who's talking about you. Tools like search.twitter.com are great to monitor your top search terms and company name. Respond and interact with those talking about your company. Build relationships.
  • SEO: Watch for Google alerts to see who is linking back to your site.

3) Promote Your Content and Content Created About You

  • Blogging: When monitoring the blogosphere, did you find a blog post that you enjoyed? Write a follow-up post in your own blog and link back to them.
  • Social Media: Submit your content to Digg or StumbleUpon. Tweet about it on Twitter. Did someone write a blog post about your company or one of your products?  Promote that article through social media sites too! A third-party recommendation is invaluable. You want as many people to find it as possible.
  • SEO: By promoting a blog that links to you, you are increasing that article's traffic, as well as the possibility that someone else will link to it. This strengthens the inbound link to your site, improving your SEO.

So what do you think? Do your campaigns use one tool more than the others? What other advice would you give to marketers looking to fully utilize all three?

The hubspot seminars always bring me to another level of understanding. With my industry looking to me for guidance - I look to you for my tools. Thank you.

What tips do you recommend to better engage the audience of a Facebook group or page?

Great information. Missed the first half, but I'm looking forward to seeing it from start to finish. Really helps in understanding the power of the Web 2.0 media.

Thank you you for putting this together.

Another great webinar! Do you offer your products in a more a la carte format? I'm interested in the blogging software but don't think I need your whole package on a monthly basis.

When using site like Digg and other sites like it, is it bad practice to submit your companies articles under the company username? Or it is best to submit them under a personal username? I don't want to risk getting kickoff these sites.

Thank You for the great webinar! I learned a lot. My question since I am a newbie, is do you recommend any web design sites/hosting sites that already includes all of the web 2.0 tools in it? Instead of just having a website and signing up for a blog using blogger.com and linking to it in ones site I'm looking for a blog to be intertwined within a web design/hosting site along with the other features like twitter, facebook, etc..all of the web 2.0 tools inside of the site??? Can you make any recommendations along with one that includes a shopping cart because I am going to be selling products. Thank You and again the webinar was great and I learned a lot of new information that i did not already know about. thanks.

I am working with an organization that is interested in inbound marketing but they not ready to start blogging. I have already learned a lot from Hubspot and followers. Any advice on if I should go ahead and get them started on the social media aspects and get their site optimized or wait until they ready to tackle all three? Thx!

Excellent webinar today! I hope you continue to do more webinars on inbound marketing and social media.

Great webinar. It was a wonderful high-level overview of how Blogging (publishing), SEO and social media work together to achieve a measurable cost effective marketing plan. Companies would be very short sited to not take advantage of all three.

I have enjoyed a few of your webinars - thanks - and a few weeks ago used the hubspot website grader tool. Got an 87 and was pretty pleased. After the webinar today (and after a couple tweeks to our site) I tried the grader again and got a 94 today. Thanks so much for providing a great * FREE * tool.

@Tyrone et al - There's more to say about facebook than I could include here in a commetn, so I'll refer you to a recent webinar we did on Facebook for Business (this is the old reg form, but you can still download the archived video there). Slides are also at www.slideshare.net/hubspot

@KMantey - When engaging on social media sites, it's best if you can do so as a person. Social media is about connecting with people, and you won't really get a great response under a company name/account. The exception to that would be if you want a company account in addition to your personal account to communicate on company news. For example, we have a @hubspot twitter account in addition to all our personal accounts, and we use it to send out tweets about our blog articles or what the company is up to in general. The other point is no matter where you're tweeting, make sure it's not all salesy. That's what's causing accounts to get shut down on some social media sites. Focus on publishing great content.

@Sue - Jump right in! Don't wait for them to get all the different aspects. Jump in and start learning, publishing content, building your network.

@Michael - You should connect with one of our guys on the phone, and they can explain all the product options. Request a demo and they'll follow up with you pretty quickly.

@Ashley - It looks like you're looking for a real all-in-one system, and we might be able to help you with that (not the shopping cart, though). Let's chat offline - request a demo and one of our guys will follow up to answer your detailed questions.

Lots of great questions - keep them coming!

Re: setting up your blog with your own URL when you're using blogging software like wordpress -

Most of the blogging software systems out there will let you use your own url (yoururl.com rather than yoururl.wordpress.com) but you need to check with them about the actual process for doing so. If you're using the HubSpot blogging software, we can chat about setting that up for you.

I wish I would have read this several months ago when I first started blogging! This is exactly the kind of knowledge a newbie needs to get over the analysis paralysis of jumping into social media/blogging.

What's the protocol for linking to an article on my website? Should I/Do I need to ask permission if I include a link, even if I properly credit it and don't reproduce the article?

I am curious if your tools can be built into an existing website that is currently hosted on another service or if you only handle entire sites.

Great presentation! One slide I've seen pop up a couple of times is the "interruption" vs. "permission" slide. But at what point do you think social networking itself actually becomes an interruption?

Good pointers here. Makes good sense to combine all three aspects to boost my marketing efforts for clients. THanks!

Just saw the presentation.

Liked it alot, but I was wondering if there is a reason you did not mention LinkedIn. You mentioned an entire array of other social websites, but not LinkedIn. Is there any reason?

I have listend to your webminar and it was helpful. I had a question that was not answered during the session, here it is: I will have a slide show about trips I organized to France or California. I would like to add sound by adding a music like Roy Orbison or Edith Piaf, etc...I was wondering if it is legal to add a song to a silde show to promote my own trips. It is illegal to download music so it may be illegal to use a song to promote a business.I have tried to find info online but didn't find anything.Thank you for your feedback.

@Shannon - Great question, your question about when/how to link to other websites actually came up a couple times among the audience of the webinar.

This article might be of help: No Website is an Island: Why and How to Link to Others - links are the currency of the Internet, so if you ever draw any content from other sites, you should link back and give credit to the creator of the idea, quote, etc.

@Barry - If we didn't mention LinkedIn, it was unintentional. All the same principles we spoke of for social networking and social media also apply to LinkedIn. We have a few articles about linkedin here if you're interested.

If anyone missed the presentation and would like to download the video and slides, you can still access it via the download form here

We've enjoyed your blog (all gazillion posts!), and we've decided to take the inbound marketing challenge for our own company and our clients. We have started our own Inbound Marketing Journal www.kunocreative.com/blog) that chronicles our efforts and results.

OMG! This was, is, the BEST webinar I have heard! Thank you so so much! I have been doing this for my clients via seo, but never could explain it to them. I also don't know many others that go to this length for their clients and I even tried to explain it to my webmaster dept. This was so good. Thank you again. Great site.
