Is this supposed to be some sort of comment on my Twitter followers? :)
While this is funny, I also think it goes to the different uses and puroposes of social media. I am friends with lots of people on Twitter becasue it is a lighter and faster medium. Just like I would talk to lots of people at a cocktail party. LinkedIn is much closer to my circle of close friends, or at least business associates. I have about 5 times more followers on Twitter than I have friends on Facebook or LinkedIn.

No, I think it's more a comment on those blasted auto-follow DMs. Someone decided they were a good idea.
And I'm with you on the Twitter vs. Facebook disparegment. However, for me it's because Twitter is light and I like it, while Facebook is heavy and I still don't "get" it.
Jonah Lopin 4:54 PM on January 21, 2009
It's not just you that's getting made fun of dude. I think it's anyone with a really high roboticly enhanced followers:following ratio...
You've got a .66 according to your twitter grader profile, which is pretty high...

Ah, the many faces of cyber-social media. I gotta admit that I struggle with the idea of writing on walls - even if they are virtual - a built in feature of my "Mother" board, I guess :)
Jamie Favreau 4:57 PM on January 21, 2009
I think this is defintely accurate. I don't think you need a blood sample but I think it is harder to connect there.
I do agree with the blast for the Auto DMs and if everyone doesn't like them than why have them? I did wind up blasting someone once I realized it was an Auto DM.
URGH.
Nice break down though.

I used to "get" Facebook - it came out my senior year of college, and pretty much my entire class started using it. Facebook I use less and less, in part because of feature bloat (way more widgets than I need), and in part because many of my high school and college friends are not as committed to online contact as a way to keep in touch even though we're now spread all over the country.

That dude that had that famous pic on Twitter from US Airways flight 1549 had a Twitter robot and I kinda thought he lost some cool points b/c of that:(

This is just hilarious! Thanks guys!
bookhling 8:37 PM on January 21, 2009
Twitter is about people I'd like to know, and facebook is about people I know. I find twitter to be way more interesting (except for the autofollow robot crowd).
Eric Pursh 9:09 PM on January 21, 2009
I still don't get the need for friend-whoring. I started to do it on LinkedIn then quickly realized how useless massive amounts of connections are if you never get to know & truly network with the people. Must be an ego thing.
And yeah, auto-responders are stupid --- they take the "social" out of "social media."
John Maclay 9:18 PM on January 21, 2009
Twitter robots. That's too funny! How many times have we been added only to find out it was suspended?
Still the networks on all social media arenas are of solid value.
Iris Jumbe 1:21 AM on January 22, 2009
I got an auto-responder on Twitter yesterday that thanked me for following him and wished me a happy New Year. Are we still saying that? The Happy New Year bit, I mean, not "Thank you".

Amusing as the cartoon is, it rather misses a big point. I don't have any friends on twitter. I have followers and people I follow. People follow me for their own reasons, but I follow others not because I know them, but because they are saying interesting things. I unfollow them if the start saying a lot of things that aren't interesting (to me). Other users will have their own criteria for following.
One of the nice things about twitter, in social media terms, is precisely that it doesn't talk about "friends" but just provides a simple (perhaps too simple at times) mechanism for putting short pieces of information out into the web and a stream of incoming information in small, digestible bites.
The real breakthrough in my twitter use came when I realised that I didn't have to look at, and potentially respond to, all the tweets from people I'm following. I can just dip in and sample when I want to and almost invariably I come across something useful or interesting in the most recent 20 or so messages.

It's amazing how good Twitter is getting at suspending robo-accounts.
I disagree with the Facebook panel though, having used Facebook for 4 years of college, I never add people unless I've met them or know them somehow.
Great cartoon!

It is interesting how "friends" are defined in today's terms. I still remember when we made friends based on their personality, common interests and they are someone who we know in person. In the world of social media, a friend can just be anyone who has posted a comment, a funny video or a cool image.
For starters, we do not even know if this "friend" exists. Is the person twitting really the person you think they are? Ever thought of the fact that Susan is actually a John?
The point is, our behavior in the social media world is slowly redefining what a friend really is. Sure, some of you may think that people who follow my twitts are just followers, but how do you feel if they stopped following you? Is that feeling equivalent to loosing a friend?
... but again, those of us who are reading and posting on this blog have a marketing title. Is marketing just part of our nature... are we really out there to make friends in these communities or just to "market" ourselves?

Great cartoon guys!

This was so funny! To me, Twitter is like being at a huge cocktail party with all the different conversations taking place. It's hilarious sometimes!
I like Face Book for networking - I don't have any personal friemds on Face Book. I like using the applications.
I like LinkedIn for the professionalism and I feel there are more opportunities to network because of all the groups and discussion questions being debated.
I have variety with these three networks.

Facebook to me is definitely more personal. The photo albums, the wall, chatting ect. I have made many new friends there. I actually make an attempt to get to know the people I request. Twitter is interesting for many different reasons. I am not on Twitter or facebook to promote anything...not yet anyway!LOL However, I am interested in learning what I can about marketing. Twitter seems to be more about marketing. I signed up and had 20 followers within a matter of hours. Is this done through some sort of automatic feature as well? Great cartoon!!

Hiring a cartoonist is easy and affordable. Many have existing content you can license and other are very willing to work with you to create content specific images. How's that for a blatant self-promotion?
rowena cherry 1:40 PM on January 24, 2009
Amusing cartoon, and reasonably accurate.
In fact, with LinkedIn, if you do not already know "Mike's" email address, you may have to be introduced through a third party.
I'm also interested in GoodReads.com (where it is possible to put up a multiple choice quiz to deter friendspam). And, why isn't MySpace represented in the quiz?
Anyway, I'm bookmarking this site.

I guess the author of this cartoon is pro-Facebook.
Damon Segal 3:24 PM on January 25, 2009
I use all three, linked in for my professional circle, and I don't link with any tom, dick, or harry. I have to at least of spoken with them first. Facebook for me is strictly for friends of mine and twitter is my local pub. Anything goes.
Martin Meyer-Gossner 10:28 AM on January 27, 2009
Is this true? Yes, it's true - oh yes, this is more than true.
Nice one guys!

You should make a T-Shirt out of that robot, it's classic.

When twitter came out, I asked, "do I really need another social networking tool?" and then I started using it, and I am hooked. It's a great place to get and share good information in small bites. I block bots and unfollow auto-dm's. To me, it's the equivalent of being introduced to someone at a party who doesn't want to take the time to talk to me, and just hands me a business card and walks away.

It's amusing that the last post is from a twitter spammer, who not only doesn't get twitter, but can't even get post his spam link correctly.
