If you're still skeptical about social media, I don't blame you.

Talk is cheap, and there's a lot of it these days. It can be hard to see how tools like Facebook and Twitter are more than a significant new time commitment.

The best way to cut through this chatter is to listen to people who are actually making these tools work for their businesses.

BatchBlue Software is one of my favorite examples. They're a small software company that's been able to get big-company coverage and endorsements with a popular blogcontent and -- above all else -- their Twitter account.

Last week I drove down to Providence, RI, to visit with Michelle Riggen-Ransom, BatchBlue's director of communications, and Adam Darowski, their user experience designer. Michelle and Adam explained how BatchBlue has been successful with Twitter, and how other companies can get started with it.

Above all else, Michelle explained, "The trick is to find out where your customers are and go where your customers are already."

Although BatchBlue is a HubSpot customer, they don't discuss their use of HubSpot software in the video above. We have a HubSpot case studies page for that.

I like simplicity, so I like this clip because it succinctly points out an important marketing basic: find a paying customer base and get in front of them - with authenticity please :)

I certainly think we will be hearing more and more about Twitter this year - the benefits of corporate blogging (when used appropriately) have been touted for some time, but Twitter is still relatively 'immature' - in as much as social media ever matures!

Interesting space to watch for 2009..
