Tim O'Reilly on Web 2.0 and Building Trends Bigger Than Your Business

Last week at the San Francisco Inbound Marketing Summit, HubSpot CEO Brian Halligan sat down with speaker and industry thoughtleader Tim O'Reilly to pick his brain on Web 2.0 and small businesses.

Here's what he asked.

1) What is the future of Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is based on the principle that online databases improve the more people use them. People first thought Web 2.0 was advertising. Now people think it's social media. It's actually how businesses work within this information network.

2) What lessons can marketers learn from Web 2.0?

Businesses have to figure out how to create more value for their customers than for themselves. Ultimately, customers and businesses are capable of building value together. Think about how you can build a platform online that enables the community to bring value to your business for you.

3) How can small businesses help make big trends happen?

Create goals bigger than your company. Having a big dream is important, and it's okay if you fail. Find hard problems that need solving and do what you can to make a difference.

Great job, Brian.

Tim's presentation at IMS San Fran was amazing, and the interview captures some of the wisdom he shared.

I especially enjoyed his response to "How can small businesses make big trends happen?"
