Companies Engaging in Social Media Have Higher Financial Performance

.

Today I came across a study released earlier this year by the Altimeter Group titled “ENGAGEMENTdb: Deep Brand Engagement Correlates with Financial Performance.”

The study looked at how the 100 most valuable brands — as identified by the 2008 BusinessWeek/Interbrand Best Global Brands ranking — engaged in 11 different online social media channels. They ranked the top 10 companies based on their social media engagement with their customers, and came up with this list:

  1. Starbucks (127)
  2. Dell (123)
  3. eBay (115)
  4. Google (105)
  5. Microsoft (103)
  6. Thomson Reuters (101)
  7. Nike (100)
  8. Amazon (88)
  9. SAP (86)
  10. Tie – Yahoo!/Intel (85)

The study focused not only on the breadth of the social media channels they were engaged in, but also the depth to which they interacted with their audience. The most amazing statistic in the report is the following:

“The above companies on average grew 18% in revenues over the last 12 months, compared to the least engaged companies who on average saw a decline of 6% in revenue during the same period. The same holds true for two other financial metrics, gross margin and net profit.”

As far as I know, this is the first study directly linking social media engagement to financial performance. It is well known that social media can drive traffic and increase leads – but the connection between social media and more traditional financial measurements such as revenues, gross margin, and net profit were previously unclear.

It is important to note that the authors do not claim that social media is the SOLE reason for the companies’ financial performance; simply that those companies who are highly engaged in social media also have superior financial performance when compared to their peers.

A good study but i'd take your caveat a step further to say it does not show causaility. It may be showing us that these companies think differently in how they engage their customers. The social media element is just the manifestation of how they think.

Nice correlation between financial performance and customer relationship (online, social). But how did you compare both. Please elaborate in depth.

Social Media Optimization really helps in marketing products and services. No wonder these brands stand out from the rest as they are really taking advantage of the social media for off page promotions.

Thank you for this meaty information. Cool blog!

Although we are not yet as large as Starbucks, we have had success with social media also. In our business of hormone replacement therapy, the "word of mouth" success stories of our patients' great health are easily passed along through status updates and comments made. HubSpot gives me lots of new ideas of things to try. People like to communicate great news and the social media marketing has help us to grow while keeping our client patients up to date in "real time". Thanks for the ideas!

If I had as much money as these companies, you can bet I'd be throwing WAY more than others performing more poorly into social media, too.

Like the other commenter said... practically guaranteed that this is not causal.

I think there is a more interesting list in the data than the top 10 listed from the study.

After you account for those companies that are strictly internet based or are influenced heavily by the internet you get a much better list.

The reason I exclude most of those companies is because of my 80/20 rule regarding social media, which you can read on my blog. It is my gut instinct that the remaining companies are customer centric and are driving value from that strategic philosophy rather social media which is a tactical tool.

I plan on doing more research on this before I come to any conclusion, though.

Thanks for this post. We are taking advantage of social marketing but want to learn how to leverage it better. Thanks...
