Influential Presentation Attendees are Socially-Motivated

.

If you want to learn more about the science of delivering contagious presentations, be sure to download the eBook now and register for the August 19th Science of Presentations webinar.

During my Science of Presentations research, I studied nearly 4000 Tweets generated during a large webinar I gave as well as a survey about presentation sharing behavior. I noticed several interesting trends concerning audience members with higher-than-average follower counts.

followers motivations

When I asked people what motivated them to share presentation content, I found that people who had more followers tended to provide more "social" answers, like the desire to share with their followers, how relevant they thought their friends would find the content and the communities of people both present and not present at the talk.

followers

When I analyzed the people who Tweeted about my webinar, I found that those who had ReTweeted presentation content had far more followers than the average attendee.

As marketers we should be aware that the most influential members of our audience are motivated by social concerns. They want to be part of a community, give value to their followers and ReTweet their friends. To reach these folks, you should remind them of how awesome their friends would think your content is.

I guess the online world isn't too different from the physical world - those willing to share information and help others generally have a wider social circle than those who are closed-off and keep everything for themselves.

In hindsight,it seems fairly obvious- if you are a standard twitter user this is an extension of your normal behavior. If you are a new or sporadic user, you might not think to collaborate socially

It seems ipso facto. When we look at whom we follow, it's those who consistently contribute information that's useful to our operation. We tend to unfollow the ones who tell us what they're having for breakfast, no matter what "pithy" language they may be putting it in.
