The folks over at Pingdom compiled together some great statistics about the Internet's growth. In case you don't have time to look through their entire list, I have selected 11 stats that demonstrate the current state of the social Web.

More meaningless Hubspot BS. This does nothing for me or my clients. It is the usual Hubspot blather. Try harder.

Hmmm it's interesting, thought there would be more internet users but it's not even 2 billion. 5 billion still without internet access.

Don't forget 5 billion wireless connections:

BIG numbers. What did we all do before there was Facebook and Youtube?

However, I find #10 a little unbelievable. If you crunch the numbers:

186 videos per month at, let's say, at 1 minute each = 7.75 full days or 11.6 awake hours (assuming awake 16 hours / day). Seems like too much.

I have always thought that Twitter was more talk and hype than anything else and this proves it for me. If 30 billion pieces of content is posted each month on Facebook and on 25 billion tweets were post then this is sooooh far behind Facebook it is not even funny. Facebook outdoes twitter bt a great deal each month never mind per year!

Rey -

Regarding Twitter. I myself am trying to figure out Twitter. But on behalf of Twitter:

- Facebook has been around longer than Twitter.

- 25 billion tweets is still a huge number.

- Facebook and Twitter have entirely different uses.

- Facebook and Twitter are targeted to different audiences. Twitter will never, ever catch up to Facebook; but that is not their intention.

Gross numbers really dont mean much if you are just trying to reach a relatively niche market

none of these is surprising really. although the number of emails sent is slightly on higher side than expected. Even with more people getting information through social media, the number of emails hasn't decreased.

I think FB is much more effective than Twitter in terms of revenue generation...

Would be interesting to see how FB's new email service would affect the way people send emails...wait and watch...

Large numbers to get your head round. We at www.winegifts4u.co.uk are trying to build a business on the web, looking at the numbers there are alot of people not on line yet about (5 billion),as these people get on board over time than the oppertunity for business will grow and increase. Both twitter and FB have there uses, facts on facebook was interseting.

Number 10 seems very high...I think...someone crunch the numbers, please...they meant to say, " the average internet video viewer watches 186 videos per month." And Twitter has 6% penetration of Internet users, so you know those who use it love it...just not a mass audience opportunity for the average SMB.

I find the stat from Verisign most interesting; at the end of 2010, there were 88.8 million – .COM domain names registered. Unfortunately, many small businesses are still Internet adverse believing they do not need a web presence.

We have met with businesses and they love the fact that their local competitors do not have a website. In one recent instance, we had to warn a business that wanted to cybersquat on a distinct local businesses' name.

Would be cool to know how many of these e-mails, tweets, fb postings and videos were actually connected to each other.

My biggest surprise were the amount of twitter haters in these comments!

Wow. These numbers are mind boggling. All the more reason to take your business "social".

Blimey those numbers are astounding and thats before some of the developing countries really come online big style. I really need to focus now on some of these areas - thanks for the wake up call

Great post! The insight provided into the online world is very surprising. Though I must admit that #10 is not so surprising to me given the amount of videos I watch. We also need to remember that many people will spend hours searching YouTube even into the early hours of the morning. I also must say that I am a big supporter of Twitter and have found it very useful both professionally and personally.

These are huge numbers. They don't mean anything unless you can break them down and find your target market. These numbers do show that your target market can be found in there somewhere.
