Although all sales managers were most likely once great reps, being a great rep isn’t enough to make you a great manager. You can’t just know how to sell -- you have to understand how to nurture and coach reps so that they can perfect their own selling styles in a way that works for them.
Sales managers also have to train new reps, enable their teams to sell better, and incentivize them to do more.
