Facebook
is dominating
Twitter
in usage in the United States, but the two
social platforms
are nearly equal when it comes to awareness. This is just one of many interesting data nuggets that were uncovered in a new survey conducted by
Edison Research
. The report is the most recent data from a three year tracking study conducted by Edison and
Arbitron Internet and Multimedia research
.
While the survey can be downloaded in its entirety
, we have reviewed the research and selected the top five charts and findings that you need to better understand
Twitter usage
and apply this information to your business and marketing efforts.
1. Twitter Users Frequently Exchange Information About Products and Services
Marketing Takeaway
: Twitter users are actively discussing products and services. Make sure you monitor conversations about your business and provide compelling content for them to discuss.
2. Twitter and Facebook Are Almost Equal in Awareness
Marketing Takeaway:
While
Facebook
is the dominate social platform in terms of usage, Twitter is still growing rapidly and driving consumer awareness.
3. Despite Equal Awareness,Twitter Significantly Lags Behind Facebook in Usage
Marketing Takeaway: Despite the fact that Twitter is becoming popular, it is still far behind Facebook in terms of use. This data should remind marketers that an effective social media marketing strategy should include multiple platforms in order to maximize results.
4. Twitter Users Access the Internet From Multiple Locations
Marketing Takeaway:
Marketing on the social web is becoming about multiple screens. Users are engaging on social networks on different types of devices including laptops, smart phones and tablets. It is important to make sure that your online properties are optimized to take advantage of different screens.
5. Twitter Users (Like Most Americans) Are Very Frequent SMS Users
Marketing Takeaway:
Today, email marketing can be a powerful driver for marketing results. As SMS use grows, marketers need to plan ways to leverage this type of communications method to become a valuable part of the marketing mix.

Very interesting, I know that Facebook was powerful for advertising a very targeted message. I use twitter and facebook but have problems with getting people to join a facebook group on a business subject, where as its easy to find business contacts on twitter.
Just my view, I am interested in others views.

Gary,
I suggest looking up industry keyword on Search.Twitter.com You will likely find good people to follow from looking at the search results.

The awareness factor of Twitter compared with its usage tells me the best is yet to come. I stopped using Twitter early on b\c so few people used it. Now it is more rewarding to use Twitter for networking and coordinating. I make a point to keep those I follow to beneficial contacts. You get what you put into it really.

Thanks Kipp I didnt know about the search engine for twitter I will get on this now.
I agree autoconversion you only need to follow those that are beneficial but when you start out you have to follow more to generate awareness, is it then wrong to unfollow so that you look like you are followed more than follow?

I think it demonstrates nicely that there can be powerful synergy between the two, for example reminding and directing the people you find on Twitter to value-adding notes and discussion on your FB Group page.

Thanks for distilling this down, Kipp. These are definitely 5 of the most critical points for marketers, and I'm glad you pointed out the SMS data as well, since I believe the key to Twitter's future will be to continue to emphasize the parallels between testing and Tweeting.
Thanks again for covering our report, Kipp!

I use Tweetdeck to post, at the same time, to Twitter, LinkIn, and Facebook. When I balance all three, it saves me time and spreads my brand awareness with consistent messaging. Social-media platforms, in one sense, are not competitors. Instead, they can co-brand and compliment each other. Each can be used effectively in your social-media strategy.

Hi Kipp,
Thanks for the nice charts and cool takeaways. Could you help point me to where I could get similar charts from a non-US context, e.g. in Asia?
Kipp Bodnar 8:34 AM on May 07, 2010
Nelson,
We don't have any data on Asia, but I will ask around and if I find some good charts, I will send them your way.
