agency-bookFirst off, let me be transparent that I believe everyone should write a book. Brilliant books are the absolute best lead generators for your business and your life.

Books are called “the new business card” for a reason.

However, too many people write bad books and shoot themselves in the foot. A bad book is like not taking a shower for three days and then going on a first date. You’re shouting, “I’m disgusting. Love me!” You're hoping someone will look past the filth and the fog to uncover what is brilliant and beautiful about your soul. It’s simply not a good strategy.

A great book is going to change the course of your life (or the life of your business) for the next decade or more. We attract the quality we produce. So the first thing you have to determine is what you want.

  • It’s not enough to say I want more clients.
  • It’s not enough to say I want to grow my agency business.
  • It’s not enough to say I want to be a speaker or create revenue while I sleep.

All those are lovely, but they are not actionable or specific to your life and your goals.

So I encourage you to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What kind of people do I want to attract to my business and life?
  2. What do I want to manifest in my world during the next 10 years?
  3. What core values do I live by that I want people to feel when they read my book?

As a business leader, I am constantly looking for love and beauty and joy. Because I’m in a service business with lots of human contact, I want to attract people who have beautiful spirits and souls. I also want to attract people who are emotionally healthy, who are constantly working on themselves. And lastly, I want to attract people who have the resources to engage the full beauty and breadth of my team.

Those goals require a specific kind of book. I cannot fake my way to attracting this kind of human being. And remember, we attract what we put out into the world, so I have to be working on myself, investing in myself and my business, and living a beautiful life. And I have to capture that in everything I put out into the world, including the books I write.

What about you? What do you want?

  • You might want to attract really fun clients. Brilliant. Produce a business comic book.
  • You might want to attract academics. Outstanding. Produce a textbook for business.
  • You might want to attract mothers. Amazing. Write a children’s book for business.

This isn't rocket science, but it does require depth of thought and then the faith that aligning your voice and spirit with your writing will pay off. And this is usually where people get deterred because fear creeps in.

What will people think of me if I write a children’s book for business? Will they take me seriously?

What will my current clients think if they see I’m writing a business comic book? Will they still trust me?

What will I think of myself if I write a textbook? Will I find myself so dry and boring that I can’t even look in the mirror?

Okay, that last one was just me. I could never write a textbook!

These are very realistic fears worth considering, especially if you want things to stay exactly as they are now. But if you want to change and grow, you have to shift what you’re putting out into the world so you shift what you’re attracting.

You have a brilliant and stunning book in you ready and waiting to be written. The essence of it is your heart and soul, and until you share that with the world, you don’t allow anyone to see the depth of what you have to offer. Your book is an invitation. To do business. To grow together. To laugh together. To connect.

And isn’t that a major aspect of your work? Connecting people? Creating real relationships? Inspiring intimacy?

Nothing can do that like a book that captures your voice and your essence.
