"Oughta Know Inbound Marketing"
By HubSpot's Rebecca Corliss
If I make one more call
I might go punch a wall.
No one understands
That this doesn't work.
They hang up cause I'm a creep.
The mail I send they don't read.
They always find a way to
Ignore me.
I'm interrupting their lives
So they threaten me with knives.
I didn't think that marketing was like torture.
Cause the calls, direct mail
TV ads, they all fail.
And they aren't getting me anywhere. They don't work.
No!
And every time I try to sell
'Didja know that I'm told I should go to hell?
Then I cry. Then I cry.
And you wonder why.
I want leads
To come to me.
Fix our SEO
Get some inbound links.
RSS
Let's get blogging.
Why don't we just use inbound marketing?
You. You. You. Oughta know.
Get my page rank up.
Tag my content.
Fix my landing page.
Let them come to me.
Now I can blog, I can tweet
Publish things you will read.
Won't have to bug you in the middle of dinner.
Google me organically
Search results one two and three.
You need my products? Uh huh. Yeah you'll find me.
Cause the calls, direct mail
TV ads, they all failed.
And they weren't getting me anywhere. They don't work.
No!
And every time I tried to sell
'Didja know I was told I should go to hell.
Then I cried. Then I cried.
And you wondered why.
Now my leads
They come to me
Fixed our SEO
Got some inbound links
RSS
Now we're blogging
Thank god now we use inbound marketing.
You. You. You. Oughta know.

That was great! But seriously, search engine traffic is everything. That's just my two cents worth.
Tom 12:05 PM on December 08, 2008
Thanks for the morning smile. Informative, creative, and fun.
Michael Mallory 12:05 PM on December 08, 2008
Well done! Loved it! But is it preaching to the choir? Those that view it already "get it". And those that don't get it will probably never see it. Even if someone sends it t them, they won't get it--or?
Willy Lim - Small Business Marketing Expert 12:09 PM on December 08, 2008

Jodie 2:43 PM on December 08, 2008
Excellent! I would love the opportunity reference this and "pull apart" the lyrics in a presentation I'm making in March - who would I speak to, to get the OK?
Mike Volpe 2:53 PM on December 08, 2008
@Jodie - Go for it. The content is under a creative commons license, so do whatever you want with the lyrics and files. We'd just appreciate a link or credit to HubSpot (this article)
Jodie 3:30 PM on December 08, 2008
Thanks Mike! It would be in handout form first - I'm presenting at an Amazon resort that doesn't have electricity (I know... I know... talking about the internet under a thatched roof and no computers... it'll be an experience, that's for sure). However, I'll be making a "Here's everything I referenced in my talk" page for when everyone gets back to what we deem to be civilization ;)

Seriously, if this is how you are spending the VC's money I would stop investing altogether. Not to mention that what you did is illegal!
James Svoboda 10:22 AM on December 11, 2008
That is great! Of course this is only going to help you own the first page in Google for "inbound marketing". Currently 2 top 10's for the blog.hubspot.com, 2 for hubspot.com, 1 for the video on youtube.com and this page is not even in there yet. Great viral piece! Google Inbound Marketing SERP

Very Creative!! Good Job!
SPDworks 11:42 AM on December 11, 2008
I think it's amazing. Alanis would only agree. What should be illegal (and I've done it too...) is solicitation. But that's all old school. Class is in, people...and the teacher's got a great voice too btw:) ACE job you guys:D I love HubSpot:)
BigBrand 12:08 PM on December 11, 2008

@James Lay - Yes, you can put it on your website using the YouTube Embed code on this page - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-lGe5MnBlY - To embed a video, just copy the code from the "Embed" box on that page — you can find it in the "About This Video" box when you're watching the video. Once you've copied the code, just paste it into your website or blog to embed it.

LOL.. That was really well put. Great video and awesome ingenuity. You're right, inbound links are the way to market and not a lot of people know this in home businesses or any online marketing. Look forward to more videos!
LK 9:41 PM on April 14, 2009
Great job. Our company would like to do a song parody but we are concerned about legal infringement.
How did you get around the copyright laws? Why wouldn't it get taken down by youtube?
Rebecca Corliss 9:27 AM on May 06, 2009
Hi LK: We are not afraid of copyright infringement. All the music was written, performed and recorded originally. It's safe through fair use parody. Nothing from the original recording was used.
Hope this helps!
