Stamps aren't usually a source of design inspiration.

But this year's edition of the USPS' Love Stamps might just have you intrigued.

Designed by Antonio Alcalá and Jessica Hische of Studio A, the special edition design features a heart shape made of the word "forever" done in a swirly calligraphy.

Beginning in 1973, the United States Post Office has issued -- on a sporadic basis -- the LOVE stamp, featuring a new design and theme for the year. In light of the holiday, let's take a look back at changing design tastes and approaches to the art of postage.
