I am a SM marketer on the inside, listening to SM "experts" on the outside, telling me how to use SM on the inside, to get to people on the outside to listen, when they are having trouble doing the same thing on the outside. :)
A great, albeit extreme, example of niche digging!
And we're all engaging in this time-sucking activity in order to game Google results and create the illusion of useful activity!

Justsice Oliver Wendell Holmes is quoted as saying he'd give his life for the "simplicity on the other side of complexity" When researching anew project I gather enormous amounts of information on product, people, competition etc. Then I step back, exchange ideas with others-- and go to a place of quiet. The simplicity arises from the complexity and I know where to target my arrows (as it were). Social Media is new. It is easy to get mired in the complexity of the offerings. Relax, the answers will come.
Really good Cartoon. Social media marketing madness. Whenever I see new web 2.0 website which can help in SMM, I immediately sign up. Isnt it also one type of madness.
Fantastic! Social Media gone Wild!
This really does sum it up for me.
After having a three week break from it all over Christmas, watching tweets from social media/etc people I follow is making me kind of sick.
This cartoon really sums it up! It is true madness!
I'm a musician who would like to connect with other musicians, record labels and music blogs with twitter but cant for the life of me seem to find any meaningful contacts due to the ridiculous number of social media "experts" who keep spamming me with follows.
Ugh, cringe-worthy.
Back at my liberal arts college we called this kind of thing "examining the lint in your navel," like writers whose main characters are struggling novelists.
While these conversations are useful, I do think the key is to check in with clients, customers and "regular people" (http://www.problogger.net/archives/2009/01/14/my-mum-doesnt-get-video-why-text-is-king/) in order to stay relevant. As exciting as social media is, most of my clients aren't using it, aren't interested and don't need another marketing learning curve in their lives.
SMMM at it's best (i think i left out an 'M' there :) is there an "AA" for us SMM's??

LOVE it - what about myspacers though
I'm an IBM BP that wishes IBM would learn how to 'market' consumer facing product.
Eternal optimist, eh ?

Very funny and very true. We have a series of comics about SEO at
Ranked Hard.
This is really funny, and partially true.
Marketing does have a luck factor in it, and that allows many people to be marketing "experts".
Great way to capture the maddening edges of SEO. It is what it is...
I specialize in criticizing social media marketing cartoons, but this one is awesome :P
Ha, all this catching up with new blogs on marketing via social media, and enacting them is leaving me no time for invoicing! I do like the cartoon though. =)
ACK!
I found this because of Twitter!
This is the first time one of your blogs has shown up in my Google Reader.
I promote your webinars to my readers because of their valuable content. Am currently looking forward to your B2B seminar.
I love it, it is a bit true and I think we are all a bit like this
I just read Hubspot's Inbound Internet Marketing Blog, and learn whatever I need to know from them!
Definitely true....gotta have it all!
This is great!
I thought about video and remixed yoru cartoon into a new one:
Web Video Madness
