I had the chance to sit down with Noah Kagan , early employee of Facebook.com and Mint.com who currently runs the site AppSumo.com , to talk about content. In the early days of Mint, Noah leveraged content to build trust and grow this brand new company to overtake longstanding and larger competitors.

5 Tips to Create Content That Delivers Results

1. Always have a goal.

Why are you creating content? For Noah, content was a way to build trust with consumers, which was especially important for a company handling financial information. Don't create content just for the sake of it. Know what you want to accomplish.

2. Minimize the work.

You don't have to create the content all yourself. Hire writers, do interviews, invite guest posts, run contests. All these options result in great content but with minimal work.

3. Create a content creation routine.

People like routines. Maybe have content creation Wednesdays or content creation afternoons. This will help you get into the swing of creating content on an ongoing basis.

4. Don't talk about your product.

Think about what people want to read. Chances are, it's not your product. Maybe not even your industry. Talk about customer problems and experiences.

5. Focus on one metric.

Think back to your initial goal of creating content and think of the one metric you care about. If your goal is awareness, your metric might be pageviews. If your goal is email subscribers, your metric might be number of email subscribers from each piece of content. Focus in on this single metric, measure yourself against it, and do what delivers the biggest result.
